Choosing a marriage Therapist

Marriage counseling is normally undertaken by trained professionals with a background in psychotherapy and family systems.  They interact with their clients by listening, understanding the symptoms and how these symptoms are affecting the relationship.

Marriage counseling is designed to be a short term therapy that can be used by couples with problems. Over a few sessions, the marriage therapist, by means of asking questions about the couple's roles, the good and bad aspects of the marriage etc, will get a better understanding of how the marriage is and as to why it is having problems and maybe even the counselor will help the couple to actually stop a divorce. This very process will not only lead the counselor to see what is 'really' going on but also the couple might be forced to see their problems more objectively too.

Stop a DivorceThe marriage counselor will work with the couple and try to get them to see that the problem does not lie with one spouse alone but in nearly all cases with both. When the couple eventually understand this then it is a lot easier for each partner to attempt to modify their behavior a little in consideration of the other.

You do not need to be married or even of mixed sexes to qualify for help from a marriage guidance counselor. Most marriage counselors will be willing to help any couple that need to improve or solve behavioral problems within the relationship. They also offer their services to couples before marriage so as to prepare them for some of the issues which may arise in a long term committed marriage.

There are also marriage counselors who help couples that are beyond the point of reconciliation, they will help them to be able to communicate with each other during the divorce proceedings to achieve a fair result in issues such as sharing responsibilities of children, property etc.

In looking for a marriage counselor you need to be aware of the background of your perspective counselor... their education, their training, professional associations they might be affiliated with, if they are members of the AAMFT and the State licensing board. It is also useful to know if the therapist specializes in any particular specialty area of marriage counseling such. Then there are the obvious questions which you might ask such as cost, length of sessions, length of therapy in general etc.

Marriage counseling can help couples to deal with the problems which may occur in the marriage helping to prevent small problems from blowing out of proportion and turning into major issues. Their therapy is always much more effective when used early on in a marriage before the problems have had years to set in and fester.
